Planning scenarios

Real-life questions,
worked through.

Six composite scenarios drawn from situations planners meet often. They describe no actual client, and they show how the pieces connect, not a result anyone should expect.

Six situations

How the pieces
connect in practice.

Each one starts with a situation, lists what a planner would look at, and ends with what the household had in hand afterwards.

Scenario 01A professional in mid-career

Four old workplace plans and no clear picture

After three job changes, retirement savings sat in four separate plans, each invested differently, with a taxable account and an emergency fund on the side.

What we looked at

  • What each plan held and what it cost
  • Whether any of them overlapped
  • Which accounts could be combined, and the trade-offs of doing so
  • How the whole fitted a target retirement age

What they left with: One list of accounts, a target mix for the whole, and three decisions in order.

Scenario 02A young family

A first child and a second look at everything

A new baby turned an easy budget into a full one, and raised questions about life cover, guardians and saving for school, all at the same time.

What we looked at

  • Monthly cash flow with childcare included
  • Life and disability cover against what the family would need
  • Guardianship and beneficiary questions for their attorney
  • Room for education saving without pausing retirement

What they left with: A short plan for the first year, and a list of questions to take to their attorney.

Scenario 03A couple planning retirement

Five years from stopping work

Both partners wanted to stop working within five years, but had not decided when to claim benefits, how to cover health costs before Medicare, or which savings to draw on first.

What we looked at

  • When each partner might claim benefits
  • Health coverage for the years before Medicare
  • Which accounts to draw from, in which order
  • How taxes might change across those years

What they left with: Two retirement dates compared side by side, with an income plan for each.

Scenario 04A business owner

Selling a share of the business

A partner offered to buy part of the company. The owner wanted to know what the sale could mean for household income, taxes and the family’s plans before saying yes.

What we looked at

  • The household’s need for income after a sale
  • How much wealth would stay tied to the company
  • Questions for the owner’s accountant and attorney
  • What to do with the proceeds, and when

What they left with: A clear set of questions for the deal team, and a plan for the money if the sale went ahead.

Scenario 05Someone who had lost a parent

An inheritance arriving all at once

An inherited retirement account and a share of a family home arrived in the same year, along with paperwork, deadlines and well-meant advice from relatives.

What we looked at

  • The rules for withdrawing from an inherited account
  • Whether to keep, rent or sell the share of the house
  • How the inheritance fitted existing goals
  • What could wait until the grief was less raw

What they left with: A timeline that separated the decisions that had dates from the ones that did not.

Scenario 06An adult child in the middle

Caring for a parent while saving for yourself

Helping a parent with bills and care costs had started to eat into retirement saving, and siblings had different views about who should pay for what.

What we looked at

  • What the parent’s own income and savings could cover
  • How much help was sustainable each month
  • A fair way to share costs with siblings
  • Which documents the parent needed in place

What they left with: A monthly figure the family agreed on, and an agenda for a family meeting.

These scenarios are illustrations for education. The details and circumstances are invented, and nothing here describes an outcome for any client.
